What’s the difference between tech and technics?

Gepubliceerd op 05-10-2024

Today, the terms “technology” and “technics” are often used interchangeably. But what exactly is the difference? Is it merely a linguistic overlap, or is there more to it? We dug deep to find out!

What is technics?

Technics is a concept we encounter daily, but what does it actually mean? Technics refers to the skill of creating things that improve our lives. It revolves around problem-solving and discovering smart ways to accomplish tasks. Essentially, technics is the application of scientific knowledge to devise practical solutions for challenges. It encompasses everything from designing new devices to constructing bridges and roads. Technics plays a vital role in our everyday lives, making it easier, more efficient, and safer. Examples of the technical sector include:

  • Electrical Engineering: This involves everything related to electricity, from wiring and circuits to various electrical installations.
  • Construction Engineering: This focuses on building structures, bridges, and other construction processes.
  • Automotive Engineering: This pertains to the maintenance and repair of cars and other vehicles.
  • Metalworking: This encompasses skills like welding and other techniques used to manipulate metal and create new products.

What is tech(nology)?

“Tech” is an abbreviation of “technology” and refers to the collection of techniques, skills, methods, and processes used in producing goods or services or achieving objectives, such as scientific research. In a modern context, “tech” is often associated with digital technologies and innovations in information technology (IT). Examples of what “tech” includes are:

  • Information Technology (IT): This covers computer hardware, software, networks, and other infrastructures used for processing and storing information. IT is crucial for businesses, governments, and individuals in today’s world.
  • Consumer Electronics: Devices such as smartphones, tablets, laptops, smartwatches, and other wearable technologies fall under the umbrella of tech. These products are often integrated with internet services and applications.
  • Software Development: This involves the creation of applications, operating systems, databases, and other software products that enable functions and services on electronic devices.
  • Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR): VR creates fully simulated environments, while AR overlays digital information and objects onto the real world. Both technologies have applications in entertainment, education, training, and more.

Tech is a vast and ever-evolving sector where constant developments influence various aspects of our lives and work.

What is the difference between the two?

Although “tech” and “technics” are often used interchangeably, a key distinction exists between these terms. “Tech” is shorthand for technology and refers to the latest technological advancements and innovations, such as computers, software, and digital solutions. Think of companies like Google, Apple, and Microsoft, which operate within the tech industry.

In contrast, “technics” is a broader concept. It encompasses all skills and methods used to solve practical problems, whether they are high-tech or not. Technics can also refer to crafts like carpentry, welding, and painting, as well as industrial processes and manufacturing techniques.

How are women represented in technics and technology?

There is increasing attention on women’s participation in the tech and technical sectors. Historically, these fields have been male-dominated, but in recent years, more women have entered the workforce.

In the tech industry, women remain underrepresented. According to recent figures from the European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE), only about 17% of employees in the European tech sector are women. In the Netherlands, this percentage is slightly higher, around 20%.

In the broader technical sector—such as construction, manufacturing, and trades—the percentage of women is even lower. In the Netherlands, only about 16% of employees in technical occupations are women. At Women in Technics, we aim to change this! We want to encourage more women to pursue careers in the technical field.
